Smith's on Bayswater was a popular restaurant and bar that was voluntarily liquidated and wound up at a general meeting on 26th September 2011. Smith's was one of many restaurants that struggled during the recession and had to close. The restaurants have all collapsed due to an oversupply of restaurants, design and wage costs and a drop in patronage.

About Smiths on Bayswater

Everyone has a story about the Bayswater. After a 28 year history, the 32 Bayswater Road venue was reinvigorated by Kingsley Smith with the help of interior designer Alice Kerrison. With an extensive range of steaks and seasonal produce, you could enjoy a Smith’s Burger at the bar or a 1.5KG Tomahawk to share with friends on the back deck or in the atrium.

Smith’s had a selection of classic and unique cocktails, and their wine list had over 120 wines to be savoured in a relaxed environment in the bar and lounge area. Smith's also had bottles of the merchant’s finest wines available in a more formal setting in the restaurant. Smith’s on Bayswater also provided a selection of private dining rooms for more intimate dining occasions. Smith's was lucky ebough to have a 24 hour, seven days a week license, with many patrons nights not ending after dinner. The bar livened up on Friday and Saturday nights with resident DJ Tony Vass and guests playing favourites on the vinyls.

Before it was taken over by Kingsley Smith the restaurant at 32 Bayswater Road was called The Bayswater Brasserie which was opened by Tony Papas, Dean Williams and Robert Smallbone in 1982. The Bayz as it was known was said to have changed the Sydney Restaurant scene overnight with its wonderful food. After 27 years it closed in 2010 opening the way for Kingsley Smith to start his now closed down restaurant.

Straight after Smith's on Bayswater closed down the restaurant Bistro Ortolan moved its location from Leichhardt to 32 Bayswater Road in a newly names restaurant 'Ortolan on Bayswater'. This restaurant however laster less than a year before succumbing to the same market conditions and closing.

The restaurant at 32 Bayswater Road is not over for good with the liquidation of Smiths on Bayswater however. A new restaurant has sprung up on the site which is called Crane Sydney however not in keeping with its traditions it is now a Japanese fusion restaurant and cocktail lounge with former Sake Brisbane chef Taichi Ito heading up the kitchen. Michaael Raft is confident his approach will last longer than the previous two restaurants: "I think the problem was ... they were doing fine dining in a street where predominantly you do have a youth market".
